Google Messages is continuing to refine its read receipts interface, reintroducing older icons and adding a new swipe gesture to view message timestamps. The changes appear as part of ongoing updates to the RCS messaging application.
This Google Messages redesign indicates Google’s continued effort to optimize the user experience within Messages. The adjustments aim to provide clearer visual cues for message status and offer more accessible information regarding message delivery times.

The refreshed interface reintroduces the traditional single and double checkmark icons to denote message status. A single gray checkmark confirms a message has been successfully sent. Upon delivery to the recipient’s device, this icon changes to a double gray checkmark. These indicators then transform into blue checkmarks once the message has been read by the recipient. This adjustment marks a return to a more established visual system for message tracking, deviating from a recent, more simplified design.
Furthermore, Google Messages now allows users to quickly view individual message timestamps. A leftward swipe on any message bubble within a conversation will reveal the precise time the message was sent and, if applicable, read. This new gesture provides an efficient way to access detailed timing information without requiring a long-press or navigating through additional menus, streamlining the conversation experience.
Earlier this year, Google Messages had experimented with a different visual approach for read receipts, which presented a more minimalistic set of indicators. The reintroduction of the classic checkmark system, coupled with the new swipe-for-time functionality, suggests an iterative development process. Google, through its Messages application, continues to evolve the user interface and feature set for its RCS (Rich Communication Services) platform. RCS is positioned as the successor to SMS, offering richer messaging capabilities like high-quality media sharing, group chats, and read receipts. This ongoing refinement aims to enhance the overall messaging experience for Android users globally. The application is widely available for download on the Google Play Store.
The rollout timeline for these specific changes to all users was not immediately detailed. Users may see these interface updates appearing gradually within their Google Messages application.
