Google is exploring the introduction of advertisements within the free version of its standalone Gemini artificial intelligence application. This potential shift was discussed during a recent earnings call.

The move could significantly change the user experience for those currently utilizing the ad-free Gemini app. Google’s Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler stated that ads, “if done well, can be really valuable.”
The Gemini app currently provides a clean interface, devoid of sponsored content or advertising. Schindler’s remarks suggest Google is actively evaluating monetization strategies for its generative AI platform. The company has not yet announced a timeline for ad implementation or specific ad formats.
However, Google is currently focusing on testing ad formats within its “AI Mode” for Search and “AI Overviews.” Schindler indicated that a successful ad format in AI Mode could transfer to the standalone Gemini app.
Google has historically integrated advertising into its various free services, including Search, Gmail, and YouTube. Expanding this established revenue model to its AI offerings aligns with Google’s broader business strategy. The company has been rapidly developing and deploying its Gemini AI model across a range of products and services.
Further details regarding the integration of advertising into the Gemini app are anticipated as Google continues to refine its AI strategy. Users subscribed to the premium Google One AI Premium plan, which includes Gemini Advanced, are generally not expected to see these changes.
