The Phone by Google app is now rolling out custom “Take a Message” greetings to stable Pixel phone users. This feature, previously available in beta, allows individuals to record personalized voicemail messages for callers.

This update enhances the voicemail experience by moving beyond generic automated responses. Users can now craft specific messages, offering a more personal touch when they are unable to answer a call. For instance, a user might inform callers of their current unavailability or provide alternative contact methods. The personalized greetings are managed directly within the Phone by Google app, streamlining the setup process.
The “Take a Message” functionality integrates into the existing call screening capabilities of Pixel phones. When a call is screened, the custom greeting will play, providing callers with an immediate, tailored response. This aims to improve communication clarity and user control over incoming calls, allowing for more specific instructions or information to be conveyed to callers rather than a standard, impersonal prompt.
Furthermore, this feature builds on Google’s continuous efforts to refine the user experience on its Pixel devices. It represents an expansion of the intelligent call management tools already present in the Pixel ecosystem, such as Hold for Me, which allows Google Assistant to wait on hold for users, and Direct My Call, which transcribes automated phone menus. The ability to customize greetings adds another layer of personalization and utility for Pixel users seeking more control over their communication.
The rollout follows a period of testing in the beta channel, ensuring stability for a wider release before reaching a broader audience. Pixel users should ensure their Phone by Google app is updated to the latest version to access this new customization option. Availability is expected to expand to all compatible Pixel models over the coming days through a server-side update, meaning it may appear without requiring an immediate app update from the Play Store.
