The familiarity stems from the game’s director, Patrice Désilets, who is credited as the creator of the original Assassin’s Creed series. This early access release is significant for fans of the action-adventure genre, offering a new experience with a design philosophy reminiscent of a popular franchise.

Developed and published by Panache Digital Games, 1666: Amsterdam immerses players in a dark, story-led adventure. Players take on the role of Noa Brooklyn, an apprentice apothecary with mystical abilities, accompanied by her feline familiar, Aaron. The gameplay emphasizes exploration, investigation, and narrative, incorporating environmental puzzles, dialogue choices, and combat that blends melee attacks with magical spells.
The game is currently available for purchase in early access for $29.99 USD on both Steam and the Epic Games Store. The early access version provides approximately 15 hours of gameplay. Panache Digital Games has stated that development will continue throughout the early access period, with player feedback informing future improvements and content.

The project, initially known simply as 1666, has a complex development history. It was first conceived at THQ Montreal under Désilets, but its development was halted in 2013 following his departure from Ubisoft, which had acquired THQ Montreal’s assets. Désilets eventually reacquired the intellectual property after a legal battle, restarting development at his new studio, Panache Digital Games, after the release of Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey in 2019.
The comparisons to Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood are notable, as Désilets was the creative director for that title, released by Ubisoft in 2010. Brotherhood is recognized for its historical setting and action-adventure gameplay, where players navigate 15th-century Rome as Ezio Auditore.
