Android 17 Beta 3 Restores Pixel’s Beloved Quick Settings

Good news for Pixel phone users! The latest Android 17 Beta 3 update is here, and it brings a highly anticipated fix to a long-standing annoyance in the Quick Settings menu. Google has finally listened to user feedback, reverting a controversial change that made toggling Wi-Fi and mobile data a multi-step process on Pixel devices.

This update, currently available through the Android Beta Program, addresses a frustration that has plagued Pixel owners since Android 12. Users can now enjoy a more streamlined experience for managing their internet connections.

    The Quick Settings Fix Explained

For years, Android users could quickly switch Wi-Fi or mobile data on and off with a single tap in the Quick Settings panel. However, with the release of Android 12, Google combined these essential toggles into a single “Internet” button. Tapping this button would open a pop-up menu, forcing users to make an additional selection just to turn a connection on or off. This added step, while seemingly minor, became a significant irritation for many who frequently manage their connectivity.

Now, with Android 17 Beta 3, those separate Wi-Fi and mobile data tiles are back. A single tap on the respective tile will instantly toggle the connection. If you use the larger 2×1 Quick Settings tile, tapping the left side of the icon will toggle Wi-Fi, while tapping the right side will open the detailed network browser. The smaller 1×1 tile offers a direct one-tap toggle.

How to Get Android 17 Beta 3 on Your Pixel

If you’re eager to try out this fix and other new features in Android 17 (codenamed ‘Cinnamon Bun’), you can enroll your compatible Pixel device in the official Android Beta Program website. The process is straightforward:

    • Visit the Android Beta Program website.
    • Sign in with the Google Account linked to your Pixel phone.
    • You’ll see a list of your eligible devices. Select the one you wish to enroll.
    • Once enrolled, your device will receive an over-the-air (OTA) update notification for Android 17 Beta 3.

A wide range of Google Pixel phones are compatible with the Android 17 Beta, including models from the Pixel 6 series all the way up to the latest Pixel 10 series, as well as the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold.

What This Means for Pixel Users

This change in Android 17 Beta 3 is more than just a minor tweak; it’s a significant quality-of-life improvement for countless Pixel users. Restoring single-tap access to Wi-Fi and mobile data toggles streamlines daily interactions, making your phone feel more responsive and intuitive. It shows Google is actively listening to its user base and refining the Android experience based on practical feedback.

Furthermore, Android 17 is expected to bring other notable enhancements. These include a new turbo charging feature, an updated contact picker, a fresh blurred visual style, and new multitasking capabilities like App Bubbles. The full, stable version of Android 17 is anticipated to launch around June or July, likely alongside the upcoming Pixel 11 phones.

    Conclusion

The return of separate Wi-Fi and mobile data toggles in Android 17 Beta 3 marks a welcome reversal for Pixel users. This update not only fixes a long-standing frustration but also signals Google’s commitment to improving the core usability of its Android operating system. If you own a compatible Pixel, joining the beta program is a great way to experience these enhancements firsthand and contribute to the development of the next major Android release.
