The next big thing in mobile technology is almost here! Android 17, the latest version of Google’s popular operating system, is set to bring a wave of exciting new features and improvements to your smartphone. With its stable release anticipated around June 2026, many Android users are eager to know if their device will be among the first to receive this significant Android 17 upgrade.

This update isn’t just about minor tweaks; it promises a refreshed user experience and enhanced capabilities. However, getting the latest Android version often depends on your phone’s manufacturer and its commitment to long-term software support.

    What is Android 17?

Android 17, internally known as “Cinnamon Bun,” is Google’s newest operating system, building upon previous versions with a focus on user interface refinements, artificial intelligence integration, and improved privacy. It aims to make your phone smarter, more visually appealing, and more secure.

Key Features to Look Forward To

The upcoming Android 17 update is packed with innovations designed to enhance your daily mobile experience. Expect a significant visual overhaul with a new “Dual-Shade” UI redesign, separating notifications and quick settings for easier access. Additionally, a “Frosted Glass” aesthetic will bring a modern, translucent look to menus and widgets.

    • Native App Lock: Finally, a system-level feature to lock individual apps without relying on third-party solutions.
    • Project Astra Integration: Android 17 is built with agentic AI at its core, promising smarter and more intuitive interactions.
    • Advanced Desktop Windowing: For those using their phone with external monitors or large-screen devices, improved desktop-like multitasking is coming.
    • Battery Health & Cycle Intelligence: Get more detailed insights into your phone’s battery longevity and usage patterns.
    • RAW14 & Pro Camera Upgrades: Professional-grade 14-bit RAW image capture will offer greater depth and dynamic range for photography enthusiasts.
    • Redesigned Screen Recording: A new floating toolbar will make screen recording easier, with on-screen doodling capabilities for tutorials.
    • Hide App Names: A cleaner home screen is possible by removing app labels below icons.
    • Multitasking Bubbles: Open any app in a floating window for enhanced multitasking, especially useful on larger screens.

    When Can You Expect It?

Google typically rolls out its new Android versions first to its own Pixel devices. The stable release of Android 17 is widely anticipated in June or July 2026. Other manufacturers will then follow, with rollout times varying from weeks to several months depending on their custom software layers and testing phases.

Which Phones Will Get the Android 17 Upgrade?

The eligibility for the Android 17 update largely depends on how long your phone manufacturer commits to providing software support. A significant change for consumers in the European Union is a new regulation, effective June 20, 2025, which obligates manufacturers to provide at least five years of OS and security updates for smartphones and tablets sold in the region. This has pushed many companies to extend their update policies globally.

    Google Pixel Devices

As expected, Google’s own Pixel lineup receives updates first and for the longest duration. All Pixel 6 models and newer are confirmed to receive the Android 17 upgrade. Specifically, the Pixel 8 series and any newer Pixel phones are promised an impressive seven years of OS and security updates. Older Pixel devices like the Pixel 6, 6a, 7, 7a, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet will receive five years of comprehensive support.

    Samsung Galaxy Phones

Samsung has significantly stepped up its update game. Flagship devices from the Galaxy S24 series onwards are guaranteed seven years of Android and One UI updates. Many other recent Samsung phones, including various Galaxy S series (from S21 onwards), Galaxy Z Fold/Flip (from Z Fold3/Flip3 onwards), and select Galaxy A series (like A33, A53, A73 and their successors), are eligible for four major Android updates. Other Manufacturers

Other major Android smartphone makers are also extending their support. OnePlus, for instance, offers four years of Android updates and six years of security updates for its recent flagships like the OnePlus 13 and 13R. Their general flagship policy (from OnePlus 11 onwards) is four major Android updates and five years of security. Meanwhile, Xiaomi has expanded support for many of its Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices, with some flagships now receiving up to five years of Android and HyperOS updates, and even six years of security patches. To compare, it’s interesting to look back at past updates, such as the Full list of Nokia phones with Android 10 update!

To check your specific device’s eligibility, it’s always best to consult the official support pages of your phone’s manufacturer. Here are some useful links:

    What This Means for You

The trend towards longer software support is excellent news for consumers. It means your smartphone can remain secure and receive new features for a longer period, extending its usable life. This not only offers better value for your money but also contributes to reducing electronic waste.

However, while software updates are crucial, hardware longevity is also a factor. A phone with strong initial hardware specifications is more likely to handle future Android versions smoothly. Always consider both software support and hardware quality when purchasing a new device.

    Conclusion

Android 17 is shaping up to be a compelling update, bringing significant enhancements to the Android ecosystem. Most recent flagship and even some mid-range phones from major manufacturers like Google, Samsung, OnePlus, and Xiaomi are in line to receive this upgrade. By choosing a device with a strong commitment to software support, you can ensure your smartphone stays fresh, secure, and feature-rich for years to come.
