A new live-action Resident Evil film, directed by Zach Cregger, is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on September 18, 2026. The film marks the second reboot and eighth overall installment in the franchise, aiming to deliver a fresh adaptation of the popular video game series.
Fans have long anticipated a visionary director to tackle the Capcom video game series, as previous live-action adaptations have not consistently matched the quality of the genre-defining games. Cregger, known for his work on horror films such as Barbarian (2022) and Weapons (2025), is helming this new project.

The upcoming Resident Evil film will feature an original story set during the T-virus outbreak in Raccoon City. Director Cregger has indicated the narrative will run parallel to the events depicted in the Resident Evil 2 video game, focusing on a new character.
The plot centers on Bryan, a medical courier portrayed by Austin Abrams, who finds himself entangled in a viral outbreak of infected monsters. Bryan, described as an ordinary individual without specialized combat training, must fight for survival over the course of one night.
In addition to Abrams, the cast includes Zach Cherry as a scientist, Kali Reis as a former military officer, and Paul Walter Hauser. Filming for the movie began in Prague in October 2025.
Constantin Film is co-financing and producing the project alongside PlayStation Productions and Vertigo Entertainment. Sony Pictures’ Columbia Pictures will handle the film’s distribution. The first teaser trailer for the film was released on April 30, 2026. The movie is also slated for release in IMAX theaters.
