IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak has indicated that a sequel to the upcoming 007 First Light game could be developed, contingent on player engagement and fan reception, ahead of its May 27, 2026 release.

This statement suggests the potential for a new James Bond game franchise, building on IO Interactive’s original origin story for the iconic spy.
Abrak, who also serves as CEO of IO Interactive, discussed the future of the new James Bond title during an interview with The Game Business. He emphasized that the longevity of a 007 First Light sequel depends on its initial commercial and critical success.
007 First Light is an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective, incorporating combat and stealth elements. Developed on IO Interactive’s proprietary Glacier Engine, the game presents an original origin story where players follow a young James Bond, portrayed by Patrick Gibson, as he works to earn his “licence to kill.”
The game is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on May 27, 2026. A version for Nintendo Switch 2 is planned for release later in Q3 2026. Furthermore, Abrak has stated that 007 First Light is IO Interactive’s “most expensive” project to date, with its budget exceeding $100 million.
IO Interactive is recognized for its critically acclaimed Hitman series, a stealth-action franchise, which positions the studio favorably for developing a James Bond title. The game, initially announced as “Project 007” in November 2020, was fully revealed in June 2025. It aims to offer a fresh perspective on the character, featuring new characters such as Dr. Selina Tan, played by Gemma Chan, and the antagonist Bawma, portrayed by Lenny Kravitz.
Amazon, the current IP holder for the James Bond franchise, is a significant supporter of the project. Players can find more information about the developer on the IO Interactive official website. Details about the game are also available on PlayStation’s 007 First Light page and the official 007.com site.
The ultimate decision on a sequel will hinge on 007 First Light‘s post-launch performance and how the player base responds to this new interpretation of the iconic spy.
