Android 17 Update: Which Smartphones Will Not Receive It

The upcoming Android 17 system update will not be available for some older smartphones in 2026. This marks the end of software support for devices that will drop out of Google’s update cycle.

While newer Android devices typically receive five to seven years of software support, certain models are expected to exit the update cycle this year. This means they will no longer receive the latest operating system features, performance improvements, or critical security enhancements, potentially leaving them vulnerable to new threats.

According to Tech Advisor, the next major Android version, Android 17, is anticipated soon. Devices reaching the end of their support window will no longer qualify for this update. This includes a range of smartphones that launched several years ago, as manufacturers typically provide a finite period for major OS upgrades.

Furthermore, smartphone manufacturers often commit to a specific number of years for operating system updates and security patches. For example, recent Google Pixel devices and Samsung’s flagship phones have extended support periods, sometimes up to seven years for security updates. These policies aim to offer users longer access to new Android versions and critical security fixes, improving device longevity and user experience.

However, older models from various brands, including some from leading manufacturers, will not make the cut for Android 17. The decision to cease updates is often based on hardware limitations, driver support, or simply the manufacturer’s predetermined software lifecycle for a given device. This ensures resources are focused on newer, more capable hardware.

Consequently, users with these older phones should consult their device manufacturer’s official support pages for specific update policies and end-of-life announcements. Checking a device’s update status can help users plan for potential upgrades or alternative software solutions to maintain security and access to modern features. Understanding the update cycle is crucial for consumers considering the long-term usability of their smartphones.
