Epic Games has removed lethal fall damage from unranked Battle Royale and Zero Build modes in Fortnite, a significant change introduced with the recent v40.40 update for Chapter 7 Season 2. However, fall damage still exists with new mechanics, and remains lethal in Ranked matches.

This update, considered the last major patch for the current season, has prompted widespread discussion among players regarding the fundamental gameplay mechanic. The adjustment means players are no longer instantly eliminated by high-altitude drops in casual play, fundamentally altering movement and engagement strategies across the island.
New Fall Damage Mechanics Explained
While lethal fall damage is gone from unranked modes, players still incur consequences for significant falls. Upon impact from a height that would typically be fatal, a character’s health will not drop below 1 HP. Instead, players experience a brief “splat” animation, during which they cannot shoot or build.
Furthermore, any fall from a lethal height will completely drain a player’s Shields, including Overshields in Zero Build, leaving them with minimal health. This makes players extremely vulnerable to a single shot from any weapon immediately after a fall, despite surviving the initial impact.
Ranked Matches Retain Lethal Fall Damage
The change to fall damage is not universal across all Fortnite modes. Epic Games has confirmed that lethal fall damage remains active in Ranked Fortnite lobbies. Players competing in Ranked Battle Royale and Zero Build modes must still adhere to the traditional fall damage rules, where falling from more than three stories high can result in instant elimination.
This distinction ensures that competitive play maintains its established strategic depth regarding vertical movement and environmental hazards.

It also brought other significant changes to the game, including an Overwatch collaboration and various balancing adjustments for Zero Build mode.
