Sony has announced a price increase for its PlayStation Plus subscription service, effective May 20, 2026, citing “ongoing market conditions” as the reason.
This marks another increase in the gaming industry, following earlier price adjustments for PlayStation 5 consoles and a broader trend of rising hardware costs.
The price adjustments primarily affect new subscribers or existing members whose subscriptions lapse or change. Customers in Turkey and India are also subject to the new pricing regardless of their current subscription status.
The updated pricing for the PlayStation Plus Essential tier in select regions includes:
- One-month subscription: Increasing from $9.99 to $10.99 USD, €8.99 to €9.99 EUR, and £6.99 to £7.99 GBP.
- Three-month subscription: Increasing from $24.99 to $27.99 USD, €24.99 to €27.99 EUR, and £19.99 to £21.99 GBP.
Sony did not specify if the 12-month subscription option would be affected, though its language suggests it might remain unchanged for current annual subscribers.
PlayStation Plus Essential provides access to online multiplayer, monthly downloadable games, and exclusive discounts on the PlayStation Store.
The company previously raised the price of its PlayStation 5 consoles in March 2026, attributing that decision to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” Industry analysts suggest these “ongoing market conditions” are related to memory shortages, specifically impacting RAM and SSD costs, exacerbated by demand from the artificial intelligence sector.
Meanwhile, some recent Sony game titles have faced challenges. The live-service shooter Concord was pulled offline due to low player numbers, while Marathon, despite positive player reception, did not meet initial financial expectations, leading to a significant write-down for developer Bungie. Additionally, Saros has reportedly seen weaker-than-expected sales. However, Sony has explicitly attributed the PlayStation Plus price hike to broader market conditions, not specific game performances.
The announcement has drawn negative reactions from some PlayStation users online, with some questioning the necessity of a paid online service for gaming. This contrasts with moves by competitors, as Microsoft recently reduced the price of its Xbox Game Pass service.
The price increase also precedes the anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto VI in approximately six months, a title expected to attract a large number of new console owners who will require a PlayStation Plus subscription for online play.
