Anthropic Opens Bay Area Wet Lab to Test Physical AI Biology

Anthropic has opened an operational physical wet laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area to test how its Claude artificial intelligence models execute biological experiments in real-world settings.

    Key points

    • Anthropic opened an operational wet lab in the San Francisco Bay Area to conduct biological experiments using Claude AI.
    • Claude directs automated laboratory equipment under human scientific supervision to study complex biological mechanisms.
    • The company clarified it will not manufacture pharmaceuticals or conduct clinical trials, preserving ties with commercial drugmakers.
    • The initiative builds on Anthropic's $400 million acquisition of Coefficient Bio and its Model Hardware Standard research preview.

The facility marks Anthropic’s transition from purely digital software simulations into physical robotics automation. The initiative evaluates whether Claude can orchestrate physical laboratory equipment to study complex biological mechanisms and rare diseases that commercial pharmaceutical companies often bypass due to high costs.

Deploying Claude for Automated Physical Experiments

Anthropic Head of Life Sciences Eric Kauderer-Abrams confirmed the operational facility in an interview with Reuters, stating that hands-on experimentation is already running. Kauderer-Abrams explained that computational modeling reaches natural limits without physical verification in an empirical setting.

We believe that to do biology, the final test is still and will be for a while in real lab work. We absolutely are doing that today…

The facility tests how autonomously Claude can direct liquid handlers, robotic pipettes, and analytical instruments with minimal human intervention. An account reported by briefs.co notes that Anthropic divides experimental tasks between this internal Bay Area site and external research partners.

Software Tooling and Laboratory Hardware Standards

The Bay Area facility builds on a series of life sciences infrastructure projects Anthropic introduced over the past year. In June 2026, the company introduced Claude Science, a specialized software workbench tailored for biological research.

Anthropic followed that software release on August 27, 2026, with a research preview of its Model Hardware Standard. The open protocol establishes standardized communication pathways between foundation AI models and automated laboratory instruments. By standardizing instructions for laboratory hardware, the platform allows Claude to run molecular biology workflows, gather sensor readings, and calibrate subsequent tests without manual reprogramming.

    Biotech Investments and Corporate Boundaries

The wet lab follows Anthropic’s April 2026 acquisition of Coefficient Bio, a stealth AI biotechnology startup, in an all-stock transaction valued at roughly $400 million. That same month, Novartis Chief Executive Officer Vas Narasimhan joined Anthropic’s board of directors.

Despite the physical lab expansion, an Anthropic spokesperson clarified that the facility is not specifically intended for commercial drug discovery. Anthropic stated it has no plans to manufacture medicines or run human clinical trials.

The distinction provides clarity for major pharmaceutical customers that license Claude for enterprise research. Industry clients currently using Anthropic platforms include Genentech, Novo Nordisk, and Bristol Myers Squibb.

While Anthropic faces ongoing political and regulatory scrutiny across its broader foundation model development, the company maintains that human researchers retain final operational control over all wet lab machinery.

    Safety Controls and Biosecurity Oversight

Anthropic has instituted strict safety protocols to address biological containment and experimental risks. Human scientists inspect and verify model protocols before physical devices execute chemical handling or cellular culturing steps.

Kauderer-Abrams stated that the team continuously balances biological discoveries with containment procedures designed to prevent accidental hazards. Anthropic has kept specific details regarding the facility’s street address, total square footage, and certified biosafety level confidential.

Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei has previously cited personal motivations behind the company’s focus on neglected medical targets, noting his father died from an illness shortly before effective treatments became available. The Bay Area laboratory functions as a testing ground to determine whether automated AI agents can compress the timeline of early biological discovery.
