Mojang has shared the first gameplay features for the upcoming Minecraft 26.4 winter update, revealing an underground Ice Caves biome, a Frozen Zombie hostile mob, and multiple freezing-based items.
Key points
- Mojang previewed the Minecraft 26.4 winter update, introducing underground Ice Caves and new freezing mechanics.
- The update is expected around December 15, 2026, following Mojang's quarterly content drop schedule.
- A new Frozen Zombie mob attacks with melee strikes and throwable Ice Balls that scale damage with speed.
- Ice Caves feature glowing Ice Crystals for illumination alongside falling icicles triggered by nearby light.

The announcement follows the earlier Minecraft Wilderness Bound update and serves as the fourth planned content drop of the year. The additions continue Mojang’s strategy of delivering smaller, focused quarterly updates to keep the game refreshed across platforms.
Projected December 2026 Release Schedule
Mojang has not yet confirmed an official release date for the 26.4 patch. However, historical scheduling indicates an expected rollout around December 15, 2026.
The developer generally targets the middle of each quarter for its drops. The previous year’s Mounts of Mayhem update also arrived in mid-December, establishing a regular calendar window for the fourth-quarter release.
Mojang has not announced the official title for the winter drop. While community discussions have suggested names such as Frozen Depths based on the underground winter theme, the studio has withheld the official branding until later preview builds.
Ice Caves Biome and Underground Hazards
The Ice Caves represent the third underground biome added to Minecraft during 2026, ahead of the planned 2027 arrival of The Sift dimension. Ice Caves generate exclusively beneath surface cold-weather biomes, distinguishing them from existing Lush Caves and Dripstone Caves.
The subterranean cavern structures consist primarily of packed ice, blue ice, calcite, and standard ice blocks. Standard stone and deepslate blocks also generate within the biome, allowing players to mine for ores in the frozen depths.
Players can find two distinct environmental features throughout the Ice Caves:
- Ice Crystals: Glowing mineral formations that generate naturally on cavern floors. Shaped similarly to Amethyst clusters, these blocks emit light, serving as an alternative to torches and a construction material for cold-themed builds.
- Icicles: Sharp formations that hang in clusters from cave ceilings, resembling the Sulfur Spikes from the Chaos Cubed update. When exposed to light sources, icicles detach and fall, dealing impact damage to players and mobs beneath them.
Frozen Zombie Mob and Combat Items
The 26.4 patch introduces the Frozen Zombie, a hostile mob variant coated in ice and snow that spawns in cold surface biomes and inside Ice Caves. The entity uses both close-quarters and ranged tactics during combat encounters.
When closing distance, the Frozen Zombie delivers melee attacks that inflict the freezing status effect. At range, the mob throws Ice Balls at targets. The damage inflicted by an Ice Ball scales based on projectile velocity, causing greater damage at close ranges where the projectile travels at peak speed.
Defeating a Frozen Zombie yields Ice Balls, which players can collect as inventory items. These items introduce two new crafting and brewing options:
- Potion of Freezing: A negative-effect potion brewed using Ice Balls. Players can brew splash variants to slow down opposing mobs and players while applying periodic damage.
- Arrow of Freezing: A tipped projectile variant that applies the freezing status effect on impact, allowing players to slow hostile targets such as the Warden from long range.
Mojang continues to iterate on these winter drop features through preview builds, with final mechanics expected before the year-end rollout.
