In a groundbreaking achievement, Samsung Display’s foldable OLED screen has been awarded a military-grade certification, marking a first for foldable screens. The certification, known as MIL-STD 810G, is recognized by the U.S. Department of Defense and is a testament to the product’s durability.

The 7-inch foldable display, featured in Samsung’s latest foldable devices, underwent rigorous testing to earn this certification. Samsung Display partnered with UL Solutions, a global safety science company, to conduct these tests. The criteria included temperature and shock tests, simulating conditions that could be encountered in daily and outdoor activities.
The foldable display proved its resilience in a series of extreme cold tests. It functioned normally even after being exposed to a chilling minus 10 degrees Celsius for four hours, with water sprayed on the surface. Furthermore, the display passed an alternating extreme temperature test, where it was exposed to temperatures ranging from minus 32 degrees Celsius to 63 degrees Celsius in sequence for two hours each, repeated three times over 12 hours.
Shock tests were also conducted, with the panel being dropped 26 times from a height of 1.22 meters, the typical height at which people use mobile devices. The panel was dropped in different directions in each test and remained unscathed. Even when rotated at a speed exposing it to 10.5 times the standard gravity, the product did not break.
An official from Samsung Display’s marketing team stated, “This military certification confirms that Samsung Display’s foldable screen has a strong technical advantage, which has become the next-generation form factor.” They added, “We expect the foldable display to be used in a wider variety of devices and environments, breaking the prejudice that foldable screens have poor durability.”
Samsung Display has been leading the foldable display market, leveraging the intellectual property it has been accumulating since 2012. The company boasts about 1,800 patents related to foldable technology, four times as many as its competitors. This achievement further solidifies Samsung’s position as a leader in the foldable technology market.
