Google’s AI Overviews are currently misinterpreting certain words, such as “disregard,” as commands rather than requests for definitions, leading to malfunctions in the search engine’s dictionary function.
This issue, highlighted by recent user reports, prevents the AI-powered feature from providing expected dictionary definitions, instead generating chatbot-like responses or blank spaces.

When users search for words like “disregard,” “ignore,” “dismiss,” “stop,” or “skip,” the AI Overview may respond with phrases such as “Understood. I will disregard the previous prompt” or “Message received! I’m here and ready to help.” This behavior replaces the traditional dictionary box or featured snippet that previously appeared at the top of search results. Attempts to clarify the query by adding “definition” often do not resolve the issue.
This problem specifically impacts the AI-generated summaries at the top of Google Search results, with traditional web links and snippets still appearing further down the page.
Google has acknowledged the problem, stating that its AI Overviews are “misinterpreting some action-related queries” and that a fix is currently being developed and will roll out soon. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges as Google integrates generative AI more deeply into its core search experience.
AI Overviews are designed to provide concise answers by summarizing information from various web sources, a key part of Google’s push towards an AI-first, conversational search model. While this issue is less severe than some previous AI Overview errors, it underscores the complexities of natural language processing for large language models.
The company continues to refine its AI Overviews as part of its broader strategy to enhance its search platform with artificial intelligence. Users encountering this specific issue may need to scroll past the AI Overview section to find traditional dictionary links.
