Google is rolling out an update to its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) overlay on Android, integrating the “Circle to Search” functionality for a broader user base.
This development expands a key visual search feature, previously exclusive to select devices, making advanced on-screen interaction more widely accessible to Android users.

Users can now activate the Gemini overlay and initiate searches by circling, highlighting, or scribbling directly on any content displayed on their Android device’s screen. This action prompts Gemini to analyze the selected area and provide relevant search results, from identifying objects in images to translating text or explaining concepts without leaving the current application.
This functionality directly integrates with the existing Gemini AI experience, accessible through a long-press on the power button or via a designated gesture navigation shortcut. The update streamlines the process of getting information about on-screen content without needing to switch applications, enhancing user workflow efficiency.
Previously, a dedicated Circle to Search feature launched earlier this year, limited to premium devices like the Google Pixel 8 series and Samsung Galaxy S24 models. By embedding this capability within the broader Gemini overlay, Google aims to standardize and expand its AI-powered visual search tools across a wider array of Android smartphones.
Furthermore, this move signals Google’s strategy to consolidate its various AI initiatives under the Gemini brand, making it a more pervasive and central component of the Android operating system. This integration aligns with the company’s broader efforts to infuse AI across its product ecosystem, as detailed on the official Google AI website. The update enhances the overall utility of Gemini by providing a seamless method for contextual information retrieval.
The rollout is expected to reach devices progressively.
