Google Maps, already a vital tool for electric vehicle (EV) owners with its ability to display nearby charging stations and their charging rates, is poised to add another useful feature for the EV community. A recent update to the app hints at the introduction of a new EV-centric feature.
An APK teardown, a method used to forecast upcoming features based on unfinished code, has revealed potential enhancements. However, it’s worth noting that these anticipated features may not always reach the final public version.
The Android version of Google Maps, specifically version 111.15.103, indicates that Google might incorporate charging stations equipped with Plug and Charge capabilities. The discovered code strings are as follows:
<string name="CAR_PLUG_AND_CHARGE_BODY">"Charging stations with plug and charge let you charge more conveniently, without using your phone or charging card. You can set up plug and charge in your vehicle’s settings and payment app."</string>
<string name="CAR_PLUG_AND_CHARGE_TITLE">Plug and charge</string>
<string name="CAR_SEARCH_PLUG_AND_CHARGE">Plug and charge</string>
Plug and Charge technology simplifies the car charging process by eliminating the need for an app or charging card — the car itself manages the payment. Notably, BMW points out that this technology doesn’t require an internet connection for vehicle authentication, making it particularly useful in locations like underground parking lots.
Currently, several car manufacturers, including BMW, Ford, GM, and Mercedes, offer this charging technology. It’s encouraging to see Google potentially adopting this standard, which could provide users with a more seamless EV charging experience.
