Minecraft’s upcoming Chaos Cubed update introduces the new Sulfur Cube mob, featuring an archetype system that modifies its physical properties and behavior based on the blocks it absorbs. Announced in March 2026 and available in recent snapshots, this system allows the mob to interact with the game world in varied ways.
This new mechanic offers players expanded opportunities for experimentation within Minecraft, impacting how the mob moves, bounces, and reacts to its environment. The archetype system provides a fresh layer of physics-based gameplay, potentially enabling new contraptions and player-created challenges.

Understanding Sulfur Cube Archetypes
An archetype is a physics preset applied to the Sulfur Cube when it absorbs a specific block. These presets determine characteristics such as speed, bounciness, ground friction, air drag, and whether the cube floats on water.
Large Sulfur Cubes can absorb blocks that are dropped on the ground or held by a player. Once a block is absorbed, the cube’s artificial intelligence is disabled, and it becomes a physical object. Players can remove an absorbed block using shears.
The system includes various archetypes:
- Regular: Exhibits medium speed, bounciness, and ground friction, with low air drag. It is buoyant and typically applies when absorbing stone and mineral blocks.
- Bouncy: Features fast speed, high bounciness, medium ground friction, and low air drag. This archetype is buoyant and triggered by absorbing log or plank-like blocks.
- Slow Flat: Characterized by slow speed, low bounciness, and medium ground friction and air drag. It is used when the cube absorbs metal blocks.
- Fast Sliding: Offers fast speed with no bounciness, low ground friction, and low air drag. This archetype activates when the cube absorbs packed ice, blue ice, or snow blocks.
- Slow Sliding: Similar to Fast Sliding but with slow speed. It is applied when the cube consumes fungus or mushroom-related blocks, making it manageable for precise Redstone setups.
- Explosive: A recently added archetype, similar to Regular but with slightly higher air drag. It is activated by absorbing a TNT block. An absorbed TNT block can be primed by Redstone, fire sources, or nearby explosions. Primed explosive Sulfur Cubes become immune to damage and cannot be picked up or sheared.
Additionally, other archetypes like Fast Flat (organic blocks), Light (wool), High Resistance (Soul Sand/Soil), and Sticky (honeycomb) further diversify the mob’s behavior.
Availability and Context
The Sulfur Cube is a passive, bucketable mob that spawns in the new Sulfur Caves biome. When a large Sulfur Cube is defeated, it splits into two smaller cubes. These smaller cubes can be grown into large ones by feeding them Slime Balls.
The Chaos Cubed update, which includes the Sulfur Cube and its archetypes, is expected to roll out around Summer 2026. Players can currently test these features in Minecraft 26.2 snapshots and Bedrock beta/preview versions.
As these features are currently in snapshot development, their exact functionality and properties may be subject to change before the official release. For more information on Minecraft’s development, visit the Mojang Studios website.
