Google officially announced Wear OS 7 at its I/O 2026 developer conference, introducing a range of features designed to enhance smartwatch functionality and efficiency. The update, however, received less spotlight compared to major announcements surrounding Android 17 and Gemini AI.
Wear OS 7 aims to deliver improved battery life, deeper artificial intelligence integration, and a more intuitive user experience, positioning Google’s wearable platform for continued evolution within the broader Android ecosystem.

Key Features of Wear OS 7
Wear OS 7, built on Android 17, is projected to offer up to a 10% improvement in battery life compared to its predecessor, Wear OS 6. This focus on power optimizations intends to extend the daily usability of smartwatches.
The update lays groundwork for new Gemini Intelligence features, with select watches gaining access later in 2026. New AppFunctions APIs allow developers to integrate their applications with Google’s assistant for direct task automation from the wrist. Examples include placing food orders or initiating fitness tracking without opening the app.
Wear OS 7 introduces dynamic Wear Widgets, an evolution of the existing “tiles” system. These customizable widgets support 2×1 and 2×2 layouts, aligning with Android’s mobile widget design for consistency across devices.
A headline feature, Live Updates, brings real-time information directly to the watch face, replacing the older Ongoing Activities API. Users can track details such as food delivery status, ride-sharing progress, or live sports scores with a glance.
Furthermore, a new standardized Workout Tracker experience is built into Wear OS 7. This offers heart rate monitoring, workout progress, and integrated media controls across various fitness applications. Google is collaborating with ASICS Runkeeper to debut this feature. Enhanced media controls also include a Remote Output Switcher for seamless audio device switching and per-app auto-launch settings.
Availability and Developer Support
A test version of Wear OS 7, known as the Canary Emulator, is currently available for developers. The broader consumer rollout of Wear OS 7 is anticipated later in 2026. The Pixel Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch ranges are confirmed to receive the update. Google has not yet published a full compatibility list for older Wear OS 6 watches. Developers can find more information on the official Android Developers Wear OS blog.
