The highly anticipated Android 17, Google’s next major operating system update, is on its way, expected to launch in June 2026. This release promises a host of exciting new features designed to enhance your smartphone experience. But with so many devices on the market, a key question remains: will your current phone be among those receiving the Android 17 update?

    Android 17: What to Expect

Android 17 is set to bring significant improvements, focusing on user experience, privacy, and performance. While a full list of features is still being finalized, early previews suggest enhancements like an improved Desktop Mode, more intuitive app management, and refined privacy controls.

Expect to see features such as a redesigned screen recording interface, the ability to hide app names on your home screen for a cleaner look, and more versatile app bubbles for easier multitasking. Additionally, there are improvements like granular audio routing for hearing aids and new NPU (Neural Processing Unit) management APIs for developers.

    The New Update Standard

A significant shift in the Android ecosystem since 2025 is the industry-wide move towards longer software support. Many smartphone manufacturers are now obligated to provide updates for their devices for at least five years, ensuring your phone stays secure and up-to-date for longer. This commitment is a game-changer for device longevity.

Is Your Phone Getting Android 17?

Whether your phone receives Android 17 largely depends on its age and your manufacturer’s update policy. Flagship devices and newer mid-range models are typically prioritized for major OS upgrades.

    Google Pixel Devices

As always, Google’s own Pixel phones are first in line for Android updates. The Pixel 8 series and any newer Pixel models are set to receive an impressive seven years of OS and security updates. Older models like the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, Pixel 7a, and Pixel Fold are also well-supported, with a commitment of five years of OS and security updates. You can explore the latest Pixel phones at the Google Store.

    Samsung Galaxy Smartphones

Samsung has significantly stepped up its update game. Flagship devices from the Galaxy S24 series onwards, including the latest Z Fold and Z Flip models, are promised seven years of OS and security updates. Many older Samsung flagships, such as the Galaxy S22 and S23 series, and various A-series phones, also enjoy robust support, typically receiving four major Android OS updates and five years of security patches. Learn more about their devices on the Samsung Galaxy official site.

    Other Major Android Brands

    • OnePlus: Flagship OnePlus devices (from the OnePlus 11 onwards) generally receive four major Android updates and five to six years of security updates.
    • Xiaomi: Xiaomi has expanded its support, with some flagship and mid-range devices now receiving up to five years of Android and HyperOS updates, including major OS upgrades.
    • Oppo: Newer Oppo Find series flagships (launched 2025 and beyond) are expected to get five years of OS upgrades and six years of security patches, while earlier flagships from 2023 typically receive four Android updates.
    • Nothing: The Nothing Phone (3) is slated for five years of major updates and seven years of security patches.
    • Sony: Sony’s update policy varies, with newer flagships like the Xperia VII offering four OS upgrades and six years of patches, though many models receive two to three years of OS updates.
    • Asus: Most recent Asus flagships (Zenfone, ROG Phone) are supported for two major Android upgrades and four years of security updates.

What This Means for Android Users

The extended update policies for Android 17 and future versions are fantastic news for consumers. This means your smartphone will remain secure, receive new features, and perform optimally for a longer period, offering better value for your investment. Furthermore, it could influence purchasing decisions, encouraging users to consider brands that offer more robust and extended software support.

As the Android 17 rollout approaches in June 2026, keep an eye on official announcements from your phone’s manufacturer for specific eligibility details. Staying informed ensures you can enjoy the latest and greatest that Android has to offer.
