Google Pixel phones are expected to gain the ability to disable the home screen search bar with Android 17 QPR1, according to a recent leak.
This upcoming feature offers Pixel users greater customization and a cleaner interface, addressing a common request for more control over the device’s home screen layout.

The new functionality, reportedly showcased in a video, indicates a toggle will be available to remove the persistent Google search widget. Android 17 QPR1, or Quarterly Platform Release 1, typically introduces new features and refinements to the operating system.
Currently, the Google search bar is a fixed element on Pixel launchers, integrated directly into the home screen interface. Users seeking to remove it have often relied on third-party launchers for that level of customization. This change would provide native support for a more minimalist home screen directly within the Android operating system.
Furthermore, this development aligns with a broader trend of giving users more control over their smartphone experience. While Google has traditionally maintained a consistent design language for its Pixel devices, this option suggests a shift towards greater personalization directly from the Google Store hardware.
The feature is not yet officially confirmed by Google. Its rollout is anticipated with the first major update following the stable release of Android 17.
