Nokia 3 (2017) finally starts receiving Android 8.1 Oreo!

When almost every Nokia smartphones are slowly upgrading to the latest Android 9.0 Pie, HMD’s last year budget device, the Nokia 3, is just about to receive its taste of Oreo. Nokiamob reports that their Nokia 3 (TA-1020) unit with the build number 00WW-3_310_SP04 has been notified for an Android 8.1 Oreo system upgrade.

    Android 8.1 Oreo update

The new update is large at 1818.3 MB and adds several features from the Android 8.1 Oreo. The V4.42D brings in a revamped Power Menu, New Settings Menu, Bluetooth Battery Percentage, improved System Stability, and December 2018 security patch.

However, some users commented that the new update makes their phone slow and stuttering. This is due to the fact the Nokia 3 uses an old MediaTek processor with only 2GB of RAM at its disposal.

The 1.3GHz MediaTek simply that can’t handle full-blown Android. And just like any other budget handsets, it uses an old eMMC 5.0 type storage which makes everything seems sluggish. The device could have better with Android Go Edition, but it came at the time before Google started the program. I think there’s no way to update a phone to Go Edition OTA.

The Nokia 3 (2017) was first unveiled last year in the MWC marking HMD’s now successful entry to the market. It came alongside the Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and the Nokia 3310 (2G). It was the cheapest of the bunch, sans the revived Nokia 3310. Coming at only around $150, the Nokia 3 features a 5.0-inch IPS LCD panel with a decent 720p resolution. HMD also claims Corning Gorilla Glass on the device, although we didn’t know which version it exactly is.

The device uses a MediaTek MT6737, coupled with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The phone originally shipped with Android 7.0 Nougat, with a promise of a software update for up to two years.

For the imaging, it has both an 8-megapixel f/2.0 AF front and rear-facing cameras. Unfortunately, because of its processor, the phone can only record up to 720p footage at 30 frames per second.

Finally, powering the handset is a 2630 mAh of battery, which is enough to last a day in single charge. All of these were wrapped inside the Aluminum frame and premium matte polycarbonate body.

Earlier this year, during HMD’s second MWC attendance, the new iteration of the Nokia 3 was announced. The Nokia 3.1 features better, more modern design, and improved specification. It is now bigger at 5.2-inch, with HD+ resolution in 18:9 aspect ratio. The device now uses a better MediaTek MT6750N SoC, with either 2/3GB of RAM and up to 32GB of ROM. And probably the biggest change of all, it now has an Android One branding on the back.
