Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s single-player campaign has drawn some of the strongest reviews the rebooted series has seen, with critics praising its voice cast, pacing and willingness to kill off familiar characters. The game released October 23, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, following preorder holders who got early campaign access starting October 16.
Key points
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched October 23, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.
- The campaign spans 16 missions across the Korean Peninsula, New York, Paris and Mumbai, running roughly six to eight hours.
- Mads Mikkelsen plays villain The Archer, revealed as Russia's Defense Minister secretly influencing the series since its reboot.
- Barry Sloane returns as a rogue Captain Price after killing General Shepherd and going outside official military command.
- Reviews vary widely, from IGN's 8/10 and GameSpot's 7/10 to Insider Gaming's 9/10 score.
The reception matters because Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 arrives as the final chapter of Infinity Ward’s rebooted Modern Warfare trilogy, a series that stumbled badly with its predecessor. Modern Warfare 3 was widely criticized as thin and padded with Warzone content, leaving fans uncertain whether the franchise could recover its narrative footing. This entry appears to have answered that doubt for most reviewers.
A Rogue Price and a New Squad Carry the Story
The campaign picks up after Captain Price kills General Shepherd to avenge Soap’s death, an act that gets Task Force 141 disbanded. Ghost and Gaz are then sent to capture or kill their former commander, setting up a confrontation that plays out across New York, Paris, Mumbai and the Korean Peninsula. Price is en route to meet a Russian figure known as The Archer when the SAS ambushes his car, and cartel boss Valeria Garza pulls him out, pushing him deeper into a shadow war outside official military structures.
Running alongside Price’s arc are present-day missions following Private Park Hyun Jun, a South Korean conscript caught in a sudden North Korean invasion. He fights alongside Sierra-1, a mixed squad of South Korean conscripts and American Marines introduced for this installment. GamesRadar notes the 16 story missions can take roughly six to eight hours to complete depending on skill and how much optional content players chase down.
Mads Mikkelsen’s Villain Draws the Spotlight
Mads Mikkelsen plays The Archer, who is revealed over the course of the campaign to be Russia’s Defense Minister, a figure who has secretly influenced events since the franchise’s reboot began. The casting continues a run of recognizable actors in the series, following Gary Oldman, Kit Harington and Idris Elba in earlier entries, and marks Mikkelsen’s first major game role since Death Stranding. Narrative director Jeff Negas told Variety the studio needed a face players would recognize instantly and trusted Mikkelsen to bring something new to the role. Mikkelsen himself has kept details of the character guarded.
