Nokia 2.2: Here’s everything you need to know!

HMD is on it again. In a rather silent launch today, HMD has revealed another budget smartphone, the Nokia 2.2. The phone follows the same design language first introduced on the Nokia 1 and even treated with a trendy notch on its display. That said, the phone will also have its own line of Xpress-on covers.

Spec-wise, the phone features a decent 5.71-inch “Always-on” HD+ display, with a circular waterdrop notch. As per HMD, the display can go as bright as 400 nits. Inside the notch is a 5-megapixel camera, allowing for some sort of face recognition. During his unboxing video, Juho Sarvikas, CPO for HMD Global, said that the face recognition technology on the Nokia 2.2 can’t be fooled by a photo.

Inside, the 2.0GHz Helio A22 SoC with either 2GB/3GB RAM will give the phone enough power to lift. Storage depends on the configuration, but it can go up to 32GB. It is also expandable.

As for the primary camera, it has a single 13-megapixel camera with a LED flash. Nothing too fancy, except the additional software tricks HMD includes on the phone. According to Sarvikas, it features an Auto HDR and “Low light image fusion technology” which to our understanding is just a fancy name for a night mode.

Other features include a dedicated Google Assistant button, a decent 3000mAh of battery, and as mentioned, an interchangeable back-cover under the revived Xpress-on brand. Like the previous Nokias, the Nokia 2.2 is also part of the Android One program, that means it will have up to 2 years of major OS upgrade, and up to 3 years for the security update. It will also be among the first devices to get an Android Q once it’s out.

The Nokia 2.2 comes in two colors — Tungsten Black and Steel — both will be available in India on the 11th of June. The other colors (Ice Blue, Pink Sand, Forest Green), however, might be the official choices for the Xpress-on covers. The 2GB/16GB version of the Nokia 2.2 will retail for 89 euros (INR 6,999), while the upper model is priced at 102 euros (INR 7,999).on its first sale in India on 11th of June.

Specifications:

  • 5.71-inch “Always-on” HD+ display (19:9 AR)
  • 2.0GHz MediaTek Helio A22 SoC
  • 2GB/3GB DDR4 RAM, 16GB/32GB ROM
  • 5MP front-facing camera, with face unlock
  • 13MP rear-facing camera
  • 3000mAh of battery
  • Dedicated Google Assistant Button
  • Xpress-on covers
  • Android 9 Pie, upgradeable to Android Q (Android One)
