Subnautica 2, the next installment in the underwater survival series, is launching into early access on May 14 for PC and Xbox Series X/S. It will introduce a new 4-player co-op multiplayer mode.
Developed by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, this early access release allows players to explore an alien ocean world, build bases, and uncover mysteries with up to three friends. The game aims to build on the original Subnautica experience.

Key Details
The early access version of Subnautica 2 is available on Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox Series X/S. It will also be accessible day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
The multiplayer mode supports up to four players with full cross-play functionality between PC and Xbox platforms. Players can host a new multiplayer world or convert an existing solo save for co-op play.
However, the game can still be played entirely as a single-player experience. This design choice maintains the series’ isolated survival atmosphere for players who prefer solo exploration.
Development Context
The game’s development has faced several public challenges. This included legal disputes between developer Unknown Worlds and publisher Krafton regarding project delays and executive changes. Despite these issues, the game remained on track for its May early access launch.
Additionally, unofficial builds of Subnautica 2 recently circulated online. Unknown Worlds confirmed these were incomplete development versions that do not reflect the content or gameplay experience prepared for the official release.
Unknown Worlds plans to iterate on player feedback throughout the early access period. This will help refine the game towards a 1.0 launch. There is currently no confirmed date for the full 1.0 release.
