WoW Forever Adds Official Controller Support at Launch

Blizzard's WoW Forever adds a Gamepad (Alpha) mode at its November 4 launch, letting players use a controller for nearly everything.

Blizzard will add official controller support to World of Warcraft: Forever when the game launches globally on November 4 at 3 p.m. PST on PC and Mac. The feature, called Gamepad (Alpha), lets players move, fight and navigate menus without touching a keyboard for almost everything.

Key points

  • World of Warcraft: Forever launches globally on November 4, 2026, at 3 p.m. PST on PC and Mac.
  • The game includes a new Gamepad (Alpha) feature enabled through a single checkbox in the Options menu.
  • Xbox Wire editor Mike Nelson says nearly every function works on a controller except for chat.
  • Nelson recommends a modern Xbox Wireless Controller since its button icons match the on-screen prompts.
  • Forever is included with an existing WoW subscription or Game Time, with no separate purchase required.

World of Warcraft has relied on keyboard and mouse since its 2004 debut, mainly because that setup gives players quick access to dozens of keybinds for abilities and menus. Controller support changes that formula for a franchise that has never officially offered it, giving longtime players and newcomers another way to play a game that Blizzard is positioning as a permanent, ongoing version of classic Azeroth.

How Gamepad (Alpha) Works

Players turn on the feature by opening the Options menu from the main screen and checking the Gamepad (Alpha) box. Once active, on-screen button prompts switch automatically to match whatever controller is plugged in, so players don’t have to guess which button does what. Blizzard detailed the setup in a post on Xbox Wire published November 2.

Combat on a controller works differently than on keyboard and mouse. Instead of pressing individual hotkeys, players use the triggers and bumpers to cycle through sets of abilities mapped to the controller’s face buttons. That lets players cast spells, manage cooldowns and handle encounters using a smaller number of physical inputs than a traditional keybind layout.

What Xbox Wire’s Editor Found

Xbox Wire editor Mike Nelson tested the feature ahead of launch and said the controller handles nearly the entire game.
