Google has rolled out an interactive Map tool inside its mobile Gemini application on Android and iOS, while also streamlining shortcut commands to a unified symbol in beta testing.
Key points
- Google added an interactive Map tool to the mobile Gemini app for Android and iOS users.
- Users can adjust a map view to attach a Map Area tag directly to AI prompts.
- Google app beta 17.63 replaces forward-slash shortcut commands with the at symbol.
- The new unified at-symbol menu organizes custom Skills, shortcut creation tools, and active Connectors in one place.

The updates simplify how users provide spatial context to the assistant and how they summon connected services. Instead of typing complex location descriptions or juggling separate command prefixes, mobile users can now manage both tasks directly through visual tools and standardized input menus.
Interactive Map Tool Launches on Android and iOS
The new Map feature is appearing for Android and iOS users worldwide. Inside the mobile app, the tool sits at the far end of the bottom menu bar alongside the existing shortcuts for Photos, Camera, and Files.
Tapping the Map icon opens a live, full-screen map interface centered on the device’s current location. Users can drag the display, pinch to zoom, or search for a specific town or landmark using a built-in search bar. Once the user frames the desired boundary, tapping the “Explore this area” button attaches a “Map Area” tag directly into the text entry field.
The integration follows broader efforts to expand the footprint of the AI assistant across operating systems, including recent desktop rollouts where the Google Gemini App expanded with native system hooks.
Prompting Local Queries With Map Area Tags
The primary function of the Map Area tag is eliminating coordinate entry and lengthy address typing. Once the tag is attached to the prompt, users can ask questions directly related to that geographic frame.
Supported queries include requests for nearby restaurants, points of interest, day-trip recommendations, and general neighborhood guidance. Gemini processes the prompt using the selected boundary as explicit geographic parameters, reducing irrelevant recommendations outside the specified area.
The contextual map functionality complements other real-time upgrades across Google ecosystem tools, such as advances made when Google launches Gemini 3.8 Live voice processing models to handle background tool execution.
Unified Menu Replaces Forward Slash Shortcuts
Alongside the map rollout, Google is adjusting how users summon tools and third-party extensions. In the latest Google app beta, designated as version 17.63, the assistant is phasing out the forward slash (“/”) command trigger.
Previously, users had to remember whether a specific tool or shortcut required a forward slash or an at symbol (“@”). Under the revised setup, entering a forward slash prompts an advisory message stating that shortcuts have migrated exclusively to the at symbol.
Typing the “@” symbol now opens a single consolidated menu. The list displays active Connectors, user-defined custom Skills, and direct options to configure new automated shortcuts. Consolidating inputs addresses long-standing usability fragmentation, which remains a key focus as enterprise integrations expand and security researchers evaluate how models interact with external systems, including past investigations where Google Gemini was monitored during network test environments.
Availability and Beta Rollout Schedule
The interactive Map tool is currently enabled for the majority of consumer accounts across Android and iOS globally. Account holders do not require an active beta profile to access the mapping feature.
In contrast, the unified “@” symbol shortcut system remains limited to participants running Google app beta 17.63. The company is expected to expand the shortcut menu restructuring to all stable releases over the coming weeks.
