CD Projekt’s live-action Cyberpunk movie will not adapt the story of Cyberpunk 2077, joint CEO Michaล Nowakowski told Polish outlet PAP Biznes. The film will instead tell a new story set in the same world.
Key points
- CD Projekt joint CEO Michaล Nowakowski says the live-action film will not be a direct adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077.
- The film will tell a new story set in the Cyberpunk world, and Paramount is the studio partner.
- Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for the Transformers films, is producing, with CD Projekt Red also involved.
- No release date, cast or plot details have been announced.
- Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 arrives on Netflix on October 20, 2026.
The comments give the first clear direction for a project that was revealed only earlier this month. They also come days before a new season of the Cyberpunk anime arrives on Netflix.
A new story in the world of Cyberpunk
Nowakowski said the company does not want a film version of the game. In his words, as translated from Polish: “We want to tell a story in the world of Cyberpunk, but it won’t be a one-to-one translation of the game’s story.” English translations of the remark vary slightly in wording.
He said that is all the company can share for now. More details will come when CD Projekt and its partner are ready, he said.
Some outlets have described the story as entirely original. Nowakowski’s quote rules out a one-to-one retelling of the game, but it does not say whether game characters such as V or Johnny Silverhand will appear. That remains unconfirmed. PAP Biznes, the Polish business news service that ran the interview, refers to the film as “Cyberpunk” rather than “Cyberpunk 2077.”
Paramount replaces Anonymous Content
The film is being developed with Paramount Pictures. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, whose credits include the Transformers films, is producing. CD Projekt Red is closely involved in development and is also a producer.
Nowakowski said the company’s earlier deal with Anonymous Content expired and a chance to work with Paramount came up. CD Projekt signed with Anonymous Content in October 2023, on a three-year term.
No release date, cast, director or writer has been announced. It is also unclear whether the film will go to theaters or a streaming service. No official Paramount statement has surfaced.
The Edgerunners model
The approach resembles that of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the anime from Studio Trigger. Its first season followed David Martinez, a street kid in Night City, and did not retell the game.
Edgerunners 2 premieres on Netflix on October 20, 2026, according to CD Projekt Red’s premiere announcement. The studio says it is a standalone 10-episode series with a new cast of characters.
Anime as a driver of game sales
Nowakowski said the first Edgerunners season, which debuted on September 13, 2022, lifted interest in the game. Sales stayed above pre-premiere levels in the months that followed.
“We hope that this time we will also be able to invite anime viewers to our game.”
Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 40 million copies, according to Nowakowski’s figures as reported by other outlets. He said the company sees room for films, series, board games, comics and merchandise. Those projects help fill the long gaps between major game releases.
