Quick answer
Wear leather armor to resist Freezing, light up ceilings from a distance to drop icicles safely, and keep your distance from Frostbites since roughly 1 in 4 throw Ice Balls from 5 blocks away.
Ice caves pack diamonds behind grey ore pockets, but they also pack Frostbites, a zombie variant that freezes you up close and pelts you with Ice Balls from range. Falling icicles add a second hazard on top of that, since a careless torch placement or a bad jump can bring five blocks of ice down on your head.
These tips cover the gear, movement habits, and combat choices that keep you alive long enough to fill your inventory with diamonds. Read them alongside our breakdown of Minecraft Ice Caves for more on what the biome adds.
Before you start
- Difficulty Moderate
- Time needed 10 minutes
- Works on Bedrock Preview/Beta 26.60.29+, Java Snapshot 3+ of 26.4
What you'll need
- Minecraft Bedrock Preview, Beta, or Java Snapshot with the Ice Caves content installed
- A world with the Drop 4 of 2026 experiment turned on (Bedrock) or the right snapshot (Java)
- Leather armor pieces
- A pickaxe and a light source such as torches
Important
- Enabling experiments on an existing world can disable achievements, so weigh that before turning the toggle on.
- Falling icicles and floor stalagmites deal extra damage, so never assume a drop you'd normally survive is safe here.
- Always back up your world manually before activating the Drop 4 of 2026 experiment, even though Bedrock makes an automatic copy.
Wear leather armor before you drop into the caves
Leather armor cuts down the Freezing effect the same way it softens powder snow, even though the effect still lands.
Step 1: Craft or find a full leather set
Put on a leather helmet, chestplate, leggings, and boots before you head underground. Full protection matters more here than enchantments, since Freezing applies regardless of what you’re wearing.
Tip: Keep a spare leather set in a chest near your ice cave entrance so you never go in without it.
Light up ceilings from a distance to drop icicles safely
A torch’s light level is enough to melt an icicle and bring it down, so you want that to happen before you’re standing underneath it.
Step 1: Spot icicle clusters before approaching
Icicles hang from ceilings and can grow up to five blocks long. Look up as you move through a cavern instead of only scanning the floor.
Step 2: Throw or place light from a few blocks back
Place a torch near the base of the cluster from outside its drop radius, or throw a torch if you can’t reach. A thrown trident also breaks an icicle and drops it as an item, which helps when one is out of reach.
Tip: Never place a torch directly under a hanging icicle while you're standing there.
Watch the floor for stalagmite icicles
Floor icicles double your fall damage instead of just poking you, so a drop you’d normally survive can kill you.
Step 1: Avoid jumping or falling onto upward-pointing icicles
If you spot an icicle growing up from the floor, route around it rather than dropping down near it. Treat any fall in ice caves as riskier than the same fall in a normal cave.
Mine toward grey patches, not the blue ice walls
Ore in ice caves generates inside pockets of stone or deepslate, not in the packed ice itself.
Step 1: Look for grey stone patches in the ice
Every ore block sits inside a stone or deepslate pocket the game places first. Follow the grey patches rather than tunneling through blue ice at random.
Tip: Branch mining still works, but check ceilings for icicles before you break through to a new room.
Keep distance once a Frostbite spots you
A Frostbite switches between melee and ranged attacks depending on how far away you are and whether it’s carrying Ice Balls.
Step 1: Back away if it starts winding up a throw
About 1 in 4 Frostbites carry Ice Balls and will throw them from roughly 5 blocks away. Backing off or breaking line of sight buys you time to heal or reposition.
Step 2: Close in fast if it has no Ice Balls
A Frostbite without Ice Balls only has its melee attack, which applies 3 seconds of Freezing per hit. With 24 health, it goes down in a handful of hits from a decent sword, so rushing it can be safer than trading blows at range.
Expect frequent encounters and plan your escape routes
Frostbites spawn in ice caves about as often as regular zombies, so you’ll run into them constantly while mining.
Step 1: Keep a clear path back to your entrance
Mark your tunnels with torches or blocks so you can retreat quickly if you’re low on health or surrounded. Don’t wander deep into unexplored ice caverns without a way back.
Brew Potions of Freezing from collected Ice Balls
Ice Balls dropped by Frostbites can be brewed into splash and lingering Potions of Freezing, which you can throw back at enemies.
Step 1: Collect Ice Balls from defeated Frostbites
Pick up any Ice Balls left behind after a kill. They’re the key brewing ingredient for Potions of Freezing.
Step 2: Brew and carry splash or lingering versions
Use the Ice Ball at a brewing stand to make a Potion of Freezing, then convert it to splash or lingering form. Dipping arrows in a cauldron filled with the potion also makes Arrows of Freezing for ranged use.
Tip: It's unconfirmed whether the potion protects the drinker from freezing or is purely offensive, so treat it as a weapon rather than a cure for now.
Back up your world before turning on the experiment
Ice Caves content still lives behind an experimental toggle, so protect your existing world first.
Step 1: Enable the Drop 4 of 2026 experiment on a copy
On Bedrock, open Create New World or Edit World, go to Game, scroll to Experiments, and turn on the toggle. Confirm the Activate Experimental Gameplay? popup by clicking Activate Experiments. Enabling this on an existing world creates an automatic copy, but make a manual backup too, since experiments can also disable achievements.
Tip: On Java, install the latest Snapshot from the Minecraft Launcher and create a new world, no special toggle needed.
Pro tips
- Carry extra torches so you never have to improvise a risky light source near an icicle cluster.
- Keep a water bucket handy, since putting out any accidental fire near ice doesn't melt the ice but still protects you.
- Check the DroidFeats guide on how to get Packed Ice Bricks in Minecraft if you want to build safely around the biome's blocks.
- Try for the Frostbite Advancement in Minecraft Java once you've got the fight down.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| An icicle fell on you while mining near a torch | Avoid placing torches or other light sources directly beneath icicle clusters; light them from a distance instead so they fall before you're underneath. |
| You can't find the Ice Caves experiment toggle | Make sure you're on Bedrock Preview or Beta 26.60.29 or later, or the regular game at 26.60 or later, then look under Game > Experiments when creating or editing a world. |
| Your Android device won't show Minecraft Preview | Preview is only for Xbox, Windows, and iOS; on Android, join the Minecraft beta through Google Play instead. |
Frequently asked questions
Can leather armor stop Freezing completely?
No. Leather armor reduces the effect the way it does with powder snow, but Freezing still applies when a Frostbite hits you.
How do I find an ice cave?
Look underground beneath cold biomes like Snowy Plains and Ice Spikes for cave entrances, then explore deeper until you spot frozen terrain, ice crystals, and hanging icicles.
Is the Ice Caves update available in the stable release?
Not yet as of October 31, 2026. It’s in Bedrock Preview, Beta, and the regular game from 26.60 onward, and in Java Snapshots from Snapshot 3 of 26.4, with a full release expected around December 2026.
Do Frostbites always throw Ice Balls?
No, only about 1 in 4 spawn carrying Ice Balls and will throw them from roughly 5 blocks away; the rest rely entirely on melee attacks.
With leather armor on, a careful eye on ceilings and floors, and a plan for backing away from Ice Ball throws, ice caves become a manageable detour on the way to diamonds rather than a death trap.
