Qualcomm and MediaTek have unveiled their flagship mobile processors for the coming year, moving top-tier Android smartphones to 2nm manufacturing nodes. The releases set the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 directly against the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro in flagship handsets arriving through late 2026 and 2027.
Key points
- Both the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Dimensity 9600 Pro use 2nm manufacturing nodes.
- Qualcomm reaches clock speeds up to 5GHz with custom Oryon CPU cores.
- MediaTek uses an all-big-core Arm design clocking up to 4.55GHz.
- Motorola, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Vivo, and Oppo have lined up device support for the chipsets.

These silicon platforms represent the highest performance tiers for both chipmakers. Along with Apple’s 2nm A20 Pro, the two designs will power the next generation of premium devices focusing on high-load computational tasks and on-device machine learning workloads.
Architectural Differences in CPU and GPU Design
Qualcomm built the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 around its custom Oryon CPU architecture. The platform features an eight-core setup arranged in a 2+6 layout, including two Prime cores clocked at 5GHz and six Performance cores running at 4GHz. MediaTek chose an alternative path with its Dimensity 9600 Pro, utilizing an all-big-core Arm layout that pairs two Arm C2-Ultra cores at up to 4.55GHz with six C2-Pro cores split across two clock frequency tiers.
Graphics and multimedia tasks show contrasting approaches as well. Qualcomm equips its Extreme processor with an Adreno GPU featuring Neural Fusion and dedicated matrix cores, while also enabling 8K 60fps video capture. MediaTek integrates an Arm Mali-G2 Ultra NX graphics processor, coupled with support for modern memory standards including LPDDR5X, LPDDR6, and UFS 5.0 storage.

Artificial Intelligence Engines Target Complex Models
Both silicon vendors focused development resources on on-device machine learning capabilities. Qualcomm uses a Hexagon neural processing unit engineered to run mixture-of-experts models containing over 30 billion parameters locally on the handset. The platform is aimed at running continuous software agents directly on hardware without relying on cloud processing. See also: Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Chips for Agentic AI.
Today marks a milestone as we introduce not one, but two new flagship mobile platforms, delivering agentic AI experiences that are immediate, personal, and adaptive.
MediaTek addressed identical demands by integrating two discrete silicon blocks for artificial intelligence. The Dimensity 9600 Pro relies on an NPU 1090 alongside a lower-power Super Efficient NPU 2.0 component designed to balance sustained background processing against thermal limits.
The Dimensity 9600 Pro meets these demands with a Native AI architecture and dual improvement in performance and power efficiency to deliver new agentic AI experiences.
Confirmed Commercial Devices and Vendor Adoption
Qualcomm’s flagship platform maintains broad adoption across global smartphone manufacturers. Motorola confirmed during the Snapdragon Summit that its upcoming Signature 27 flagship will ship with the top-tier processor alongside a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera system. Details on that device emerged shortly after coverage of the Snapdragon 8 Elite hardware announcement.
Other Android hardware manufacturers have initiated hardware integration. The Xiaomi 18 Pro series will utilize the platform, and benchmark database entries indicate the OnePlus 16 will carry the processor as well. Outside Qualcomm’s camp, news has tracked other upcoming flagships, including leaks surrounding next-generation competitors like the Pixel 11 Pro XL Leaks.
MediaTek continues to grow its presence in the premium segment after the previous-generation Dimensity 9500 matched flagship competitors in multiple independent metrics. The Dimensity 9600 Pro is confirmed to power the Vivo X500 Pro and Vivo X500 Pro Max. Oppo will also deploy the processor inside the Find X10 Pro and Find X10 Pro Max. Further partner phone release schedules and retail prices will be disclosed by individual phone makers during upcoming hardware unveilings.
