Rockstar Games’ GTA 6 will need up to 212 GB of storage, but a dataminer says that number could have topped 400 GB without the studio’s compression work, according to posts shared on X.
Key points
- Rockstar confirmed GTA 6 needs up to 212 GB of storage, a figure that may vary by console.
- Dataminer Tex2 claims the game could have exceeded 400 GB without Rockstar's RPF compression.
- GTA 5's Legacy Edition reportedly would have topped 250 GB uncompressed versus its actual 120 GB size.
- Digital preloading for GTA 6 now begins November 10, 2026, ahead of the November 19 launch.
- GTA 6 launches exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC version announced yet.
The claim matters because GTA 6’s file size has already drawn attention as one of the largest console game downloads to date, and it helps explain how Rockstar squeezed a map the size of Leonida onto a single install package. Players preparing to preload the game on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S will want to know why the number looks the way it does.
What the Dataminer Claims About RPF Compression
Dataminer Tex2 said on X that GTA 6 could have required more than 400 GB of storage without Rockstar’s RPF, or RAGE Package File, compression. RPF is a proprietary container format built for Rockstar’s RAGE Engine. It bundles thousands of assets, including 3D models, textures, scripts and maps, into a single package rather than storing them as separate files.
Tex2 also backed another user’s post claiming that GTA 5’s Legacy Edition, including all Online downloadable content, would have exceeded 250 GB without the same compression. Rockstar’s RPF format reportedly brought that total down to about 120 GB. Neither figure has been independently verified by other outlets, and both trace back to the same dataminer post.
Rockstar’s Official 212 GB Figure
Rockstar itself has only confirmed the final number: up to 212 GB, a figure the company says “may change depending on your device,” per the official storage announcement reported by Vice. The PlayStation Blog separately told players to clear at least 212 GB of space ahead of launch. Rockstar has not published a breakdown of how the figure splits between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so some variation between platforms is possible.
The 212 GB number lines up closely with an earlier leak. An account called “PlayStation Game Size” had pegged the install at 210 GB after pulling the figure from the PlayStation Store backend, a number that turned out to be nearly exact once Rockstar confirmed the official size.
How Audio Compression Factors In
Tex2 also claims Rockstar is using MP3 audio formats for GTA 6, the same approach used in GTA 5 Enhanced. That switch reportedly cut GTA 5’s base audio pack from roughly 16 GB to 8 GB and trimmed its DLC audio packs from about 66 GB to 51 GB. Applying similar techniques to GTA 6, alongside RPF compression, would account for much of the gap between a theoretical 400 GB-plus build and the 212 GB figure Rockstar has confirmed.
The scale of the install size is not surprising given what Rockstar has shown of Leonida so far. Recent marketing, including GTA 6 ads placed pitchside during El Clasico and a brief gameplay clip that aired during GTA 6 coverage on South Park, has shown dense street-level detail across the fictional state. Rockstar has also detailed features like fully working public transit, with GTA 6 set to include rideable buses and trains throughout Leonida.
Preload and Launch Timing
Rockstar moved up digital preloading for GTA 6 to November 10, 2026, two days earlier than the November 12 date announced back in June. The full launch remains set for November 19, 2026, exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC version or release date has been announced.
GTA 6’s confirmed size is roughly double that of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar’s previous release, and far exceeds the footprint of GTA 5 at launch. The game follows protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos through Leonida, a setting that includes a return to the Vice City-style metropolis introduced in 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Rockstar has said it will add a free printable cover art poster and map of Leonida to its official site on November 19, the day the game launches.
