Apple Intelligence Requires 14GB Storage on Select iPhones

Apple's updated iOS 27 documentation reveals that Apple Intelligence now demands up to 14GB of storage on select iPhones to power new on-device Siri features.

Apple has increased the local storage requirement for Apple Intelligence up to 14GB on select devices running iOS 27, almost doubling the footprint needed to run the company’s full suite of on-device artificial intelligence features.

Key points

  • Apple increased the storage requirement for Apple Intelligence up to 14GB on select flagship devices.
  • The 14GB demand affects iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone Air, iPhone Duo, and the iPhone 18 Pro series.
  • Advanced Siri AI voice customization and enhanced dictation models drive the increased storage footprint.
  • Standard supported iPhones, iPads, and Macs still require 8GB of free space for Apple Intelligence.
  • Local AI processing preserves user privacy but permanently uses onboard flash storage.

The change impacts owners of newer flagship hardware who keep low amounts of free space. Because Apple executes many machine-learning models directly on the processor to protect privacy, complex features reserve substantial local flash storage rather than offloading tasks to the cloud.

Affected Hardware and Higher Storage Demands

According to Apple’s updated support documentation, users must have up to 14GB of available storage on specific models to install and operate all Apple Intelligence components. The requirement applies to the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the iPhone Duo.

The increased capacity also extends to tablets and computers equipped with higher unified memory configurations. Apple lists iPad models running the M4 chip or later with at least 12GB of unified memory, Mac models powered by M3 or later with at least 12GB of unified memory, and the Apple Vision Pro with M5 under the 14GB threshold.

New Siri Voice and Dictation Models

The extra 6GB footprint on high-end devices stems from two resource-heavy features exclusive to those models. The first is Siri AI voice customization, which allows the assistant to adjust its expressiveness, inflection, and speech pace. The second is an improved speech recognition model that delivers higher dictation accuracy in noisy environments.

Both tools rely on larger parameter models stored directly on the device. Apple distributes these advanced packages only to hardware with sufficient memory bandwidth and neural engine performance, leaving standard models on baseline configurations.

Other devices eligible for Apple Intelligence continue to need 8GB of free space. These include base iPhone models, earlier Pro models such as the iPhone 15 Pro, and Macs with 8GB of unified memory. Compatible Apple Watch models running paired intelligence tools require up to 1.5GB.

Evolution of Local AI Storage Footprints

Local storage requirements for Apple Intelligence have risen steadily since its introduction. When the platform debuted alongside iOS 18.1 in late 2024, the operating system required 4GB of free space to download basic summarization and writing tools. That requirement climbed to 7GB with the release of iOS 18.2, which added generative tools such as Genmoji and Image Playground.

The stable rollout of iOS 27, which arrived the week of September 14, 2026, marks the platform’s biggest expansion of on-device models to date. Apple also overhauled assistant functionality across the system, complementing changes seen in Siri’s iOS 27 upgrade.

Apple has not stated whether iOS 27 users can selectively remove or disable the advanced voice customization and dictation files to free up space. Without an option to uninstall individual components, users on lower-capacity tiers must maintain at least 14GB of free memory to keep all system intelligence features active.
