Samsung Galaxy S27 Display Rumored to Feature DC Dimming

Samsung may add DC dimming to the Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra displays to reduce screen flicker, alongside a worldwide Snapdragon processor for the Ultra.

Samsung plans to bring direct current dimming to the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra displays, according to details shared by tipster @WalleGalaxy on X. The adjustment would mark the first time Samsung smartphones do not rely solely on pulse-width modulation to control display brightness.

Key points

  • Leaked reports indicate Samsung will introduce DC dimming on the Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra to reduce display flicker.
  • The technology adjusts electrical current directly instead of cycling pixels on and off using pulse-width modulation.
  • Current Galaxy S26, iPhone 18, and Pixel 10 displays limit PWM frequency to 480Hz.
  • The Galaxy S27 Ultra will reportedly use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip in all global markets.

Pulse-width modulation, or PWM, simulates lower screen luminance by rapidly cycling pixels on and off. The resulting invisible strobing effect causes eye strain, fatigue, and headaches in an estimated 10 percent of users who are sensitive to display flicker.

Display Dimming Shift for Upcoming Flagships

According to the leak, Samsung intends to implement DC dimming across both the Pro and Ultra tiers. It remains unconfirmed whether the base model in the Galaxy S27 lineup will receive the hardware adjustment or continue relying strictly on PWM.

Unlike pulse-width modulation, direct current dimming alters screen illumination by adjusting the electrical current supplied directly to the panel. Because the pixels remain powered continuously rather than flickering off and on, the approach minimizes visual stress during low-light viewing.

DC Dimming Versus Pulse-Width Modulation

While DC dimming addresses eye strain, pure direct-current control often introduces color distortion and uneven gray tones at low brightness settings. To avoid degradation in visual quality, competing manufacturers often deploy hybrid dimming solutions.

Devices such as the Honor Magic 8 Pro, Xiaomi 17 Ultra, and OnePlus 15 combine high-frequency PWM above 2,000Hz at low brightness with DC dimming at higher illumination levels. In contrast, existing panels on the Galaxy S26, the iPhone 17 and 18, and the Google Pixel 10 cap frequency at 480Hz.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 Planned for Ultra

In addition to display revisions, Samsung plans to equip the Galaxy S27 Ultra with Qualcomm processors worldwide. A report from leaker yeux1122 on Naver states that the Ultra model will run the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 in every sales territory.

The global deployment follows earlier testing where engineers evaluated an internal Galaxy S27 prototype powered by the Exynos 2700. For the prior generation, Samsung split component sourcing by region, supplying the Exynos 2600 to European and UK markets while reserving Qualcomm silicon for North America, China, and Japan.

The reported processor strategy accompanies separate hardware changes recently highlighted in Galaxy S27 accessory leaks. Samsung is expected to pair the Snapdragon platform with customized firmware optimizations tailored specifically for the flagship series.
